While Ruth Maier (1920–1942) is considered a symbol of the Jewish Holocaust victim in Norwegian cultural memory, her queerness remains a largely untreated subject. In this chapter, the author examines how Maier’s romantic relationships with other women are subject to a form of double concealment: first as she – as did most of her queer contemporaries – had to mask and hide her feelings during her upbringing and the war. Then, the post-war memory culture failed to discuss the queer aspects of her texts in the context of the Holocaust. This chapter examines Ruth Maier’s portrayals of her own sexuality and romantic relationships in letters, poems and diaries spanning from 1934 to 1942. By analysing Maier’s texts and examining her position in Norwegian cultural memory, the author not only seeks to enrich the understanding of different considerations around queer romance and sexuality, but also seeks to expand our insight into the relationship between homosexuality and the Holocaust in Norway.
