The article analyzes the presence of female art historians in one of the most important publishing enterprises between the wars, the Enciclopedia Italiana di scienze, lettere ed arti, founded and financed by Giovanni Treccani, directed by Giovanni Gentile and printed between 1929 and 1937. Within the grand Treccani project, women were excluded from all key roles in the enterprise, which were reserved for men, and, of the small number of female contributors, one-third contributed to the art history section, directed by Toesca. Half Italian and half foreign, they contributed entries of varying sizes, from single short entries on topics of specific expertise to long lists of biographies on artists, entries on iconography, art topography, techniques and types of objects.
