This article focuses on the Formoso stilt village, a pre-colonial archaeological site formed by stilts in the estuarine region of Baixada Maranhense. The analysis of the ceramic material from this site revealed technological characteristics of the Incised-Punctate/Arauquinoid Tradition, indicating a new phase of this archaeological tradition. In this sense, a new geographic frontier is suggested to disperse this tradition, with Maranhão as its easternmost portion of the expansion. The spatial analysis of the settlement showed a linear area connected, possibly by a stilt bridge, to another circular set. The study of the collected artifacts confirmed to interpret that the linear area is a ceremonial space, whereas the circular area is residential. The Formoso stilt village presents an unprecedented form of indigenous habitation never before described in the Archeology of the Lowlands of South America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
