This essay probes the concept of horror and terror attached to the “aswang” character and its evolving discourses of time and space in the most successful horror film franchise Shake, Rattle, and Roll (SRR). It focuses on how the six episodes of SRR about the viscera-sucking creature aswang mediate and meditate the history of ideas embedded in the dialectic of discourses on center and periphery, city and province, and modernity and tradition. Finally, the essay analyzes how SRR can be an articulation of colonial imaginaries on one hand, and horrific socio-political realities on the other hand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
