This study aimed to analyze the issue of skill transferability between occupations in midlife career transitions and estimate the occupational mobility distance by applying social network analysis techniques to occupational mobility data. Assuming that the estimated occupational mobility distance reflects the skill transferability between occupations, the study analyzed the impact of midlife career transitions on occupational mobility. The results confirmed the following facts: Firstly, as occupational centrality increased, wages were found to be lower. This could be attributed to the active movement of midlife individuals between low-wage occupations or into low-wage occupations. Secondly, individuals with higher occupational introverted centrality were less likely to change occupations, while those with higher extroverted centrality showed a tendency to change occupations. Thirdly, longer occupational mobility distances resulted in greater wage losses due to skill loss. Lastly, individuals with higher current skill levels had shorter occupational mobility distances when changing jobs. This can be interpreted as a motivation to minimize skill loss through career transitions as skill levels increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
