Background: Child health services research (HSR) is a young but dynamically developing field of research in Germany. Child HSR is highly relevant for rational decision-making and contributes to more quality and equity in the delivery of health services. Aim: This overview describes the specific contents and methodological requirements of HSR in childhood and adolescence. Based on the example of children and adolescents with special (social pediatric) healthcare needs, the complexity of care processes and structures as well as potential needs-oriented approaches to healthcare services and care in the future are sketched out. Material and methods: In addition to a literature search, specific information from the working group for children and adolescents in the German network of health services research (DNVF) and data from a social pediatric research consortium were used. Results and discussion: In comparison to adult HSR, child HSR is characterized by specific challenges which are related to the ongoing development of children, the embeddedness of children within families, the high importance of the everyday settings as well as a care network of professionals across different systems, sectors and disciplines. Child HSR can provide an important contribution to an evidence-based, rational health policy for children and adolescents and should be considered increasingly more by pediatricians as an alternative research field. Funding policies should enable and facilitate sustainability of HSR, including long-term observation periods, and foster the participation of children and youth in the design of future funding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
