The urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids and 17-hydroxycorticosteroids before and after ACTH stimulation were estimated in 24 patients with xeroderma pigmentosum, 30 selected apparently normal relatives and 18 normal subjects of the same range of age. The values obtained in the normal relatives and the controls were in the same range. In the majority of xeroderma pigmentosum cases (males, females, adults and children) a decrease in the urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids and 17-hydroxy- corticosteroids was found. The corticotrophin test gave a response lagging behind normal. The possibility of secondary adrenal hypofunction is postulated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
