The Spondyloarthritis Research and Treatment Network (SPARTAN) has developed the first referral recommendations for axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), an inflammatory arthritis that affects the central skeleton and has genetic links to skin psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and inflammatory eye disease. Patients with axSpA often wait up to 10 years for a diagnosis, and there are currently no guidelines for when to refer patients to a rheumatologist. To address this issue, researchers conducted a literature review and identified 10 features associated with axSpA, including pain sites, family history, blood markers, genetic testing, and imaging findings. These features were assigned points, and a score of 3 points qualifies for a referral for adults aged 45 years or younger with chronic pain in the back, hip, or buttock. The researchers expect that these referral criteria will result in about one in three referred adults being diagnosed with axSpA. However, further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of these recommendations. [Extracted from the article]
