A recent study conducted at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital aimed to develop a transcriptome-based classifier to accurately differentiate between uterine leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma. The researchers manually selected normal uterine tissue and leiomyosarcoma samples for training and validation sets. They identified 17 genes associated with DNA replication that were expressed in a highly variable way in leiomyosarcoma but in a conserved way in normal uterine samples. The deep feedforward neural network (DNN) classifier showed promising results in distinguishing between the two conditions, with a sensitivity of 0.88 and 0.77 in two test data sets. This method could potentially aid in clinical practice by allowing for the biopsy of samples before surgery, thus minimizing the risk of tumor spread. [Extracted from the article]
