A recent study conducted at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada has provided new information about the durability of radiofrequency endometrial ablation (REA) as a treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding. The study found that the overall probability of needing a hysterectomy after REA was 22.6%. The probability of hysterectomy was higher for women under 40 years old, with certain risk factors such as tubal occlusion, cesarean section, dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, and leiomyomas. The researchers concluded that the decision to proceed with REA should be individualized, taking into account the underlying causes of abnormal uterine bleeding and respecting patient autonomy.
