Researchers from Tehran University of Medical Sciences have conducted a study on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a multiple sclerosis animal model. The study found that calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, has immunomodulatory effects and can ameliorate EAE symptoms by favoring regulatory T cells (Tregs) over T helper 17 cells (Th17). The researchers assessed the impact of calcitriol on EAE manifestations and cytokine profile in mice and found that calcitriol treatment reversed the changes in cytokine levels and attenuated EAE symptoms. This study provides further evidence of the anti-inflammatory effects of calcitriol and its role in attenuating EAE. [Extracted from the article]
