Research into citizen initiatives in Flanders shows how citizens organise themselves around themes they are confronted with in their daily lives. In this article I want to use exploratory research to investigate whether and how citizen initiatives contribute to a vital democracy. Based on a specific interpretation of democracy and politicisation, I investigate which voices are heard by citizen initiatives and whether and how they disrupt the existing order in society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
