Researchers from Shenzhen University in China have developed a low-cost and portable instrumented shoe system for gait phase detection. The shoe consists of 174 independent sensing units made from a conductive copolymer film. The system uses a customized algorithm to detect different phases of walking, such as initial contact, flat foot, and push off. The results of experiments showed that the system's performance was comparable to existing methods. The researchers believe that this system could be used for convenient gait monitoring in home healthcare settings, allowing for extensive data collection and the development of effective treatment and rehabilitation strategies for patients with movement disorders.
