A new report from researchers at the Leipzig Heart Center in Germany discusses the findings of a study on sex-related differences in outcomes after proximal aortic surgery. The study found that guidelines on the management of aortic aneurysm disease do not account for sex differences, despite evidence of faster aneurysm growth, increased rupture risk, and higher postoperative mortality in women. The researchers analyzed data from 1,773 consecutive patients who underwent surgical procedures on the aortic valve and proximal aorta between 2000 and 2018. They found that women had higher in-hospital mortality rates and lower midterm survival rates compared to men. The study suggests that more research is needed to understand and prevent these worse outcomes in female patients. [Extracted from the article]
