Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, is the common foliar disease of wheat in all regions where the crop is grown. The race variability in the populations of Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici in Bulgaria during 2020 – 2021 was investigated. The investigation was carried out under greenhouse conditions at climatic parameters close to the optimal for development of the pathogen. Three pure cultures were made from each sample, and 12 differential varieties and 15 monogenic lines at stage second leaf were infected with each of the cultures. After 8-10 days the type of infection was identified. Out of the 39 samples from 25 common winter wheat varieties and lines, 120 isolates were prepared and 21 races were identified. Race 3657 had highest frequency of occurrence (30.83%), followed by races 3677 (25.00%), 7757 (11.67%) and 7777 (10.00%). Among the samples developed during this period two new races were dentified – 2457 and 6457. The results of the study show that there is a great genetic diversity in the populations of the pathogen with different virulence. Thirty-nine genetic formulae of different virulence according to the used Pm genes were established. The most frequent genetic formula was 1 / 2,3a,3b,3c,3d,4a,4b,5,6,2+6,7,8,17,1+2+9 и 1,3c,17 / 2,3a,3b,3d,4a,4b,5,6,2+6,7,8,1+2+9, which accounted for 7.02% from the developed samples. Genes Pm 3c, Pm 17, Pm 1, и Pm 4a had highest efficiency against the identified races. The gene combinations Pm 2+6 and Pm 1+2+9, as well as the genes Pm 2 and Pm 3b and Pm 4b, have the lowest efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
