Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a condition with an intraoral burning dysaesthetic sensation or pain that recurs daily for more than 2 hours for more than 3 months. The most common site of burning sensation is the tongue, but other sites of the oral cavity are also affected. BMS is a primary condition diagnosed after ruling out causative lesions through clinical examination and supplementary investigations. Burning mouth symptoms can be secondary to local or systemic causes such as candida infections, oral lichen planus, hyposalivation, allergies, anemia, or vitamin deficiencies. The typical patient with BMS is a middle-aged or postmenopausal woman. Evidence suggests that these patients experience higher levels of psychological distress, such as anxiety and depression, when compared to the general population. Although several treatment approaches are suggested, there is still no consensus, but all patients suffering from BMS should always receive counselling including information on home remedies and lifestyle factors such as avoiding dehydration, acidic foods and drinks, spicy food, alcohol and tobacco products, alcohol-based mouth rinses, flavoured oral hygiene products, and, if possible, stress. Antidepressants, anxiolytics, and psychotherapies are front-line treatments for BMS. Taken together, BMS is a bothersome condition for which we still have knowledge gaps regarding aetiology, pathophysiology, and treatment approaches and need to be further investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
