The article delves into a little-known but significant event in the history of the Belgrade Metropolitanate. It describes a unique case in Ottoman administrative practice, where the income of the Orthodox Church diocese was leased to secular individuals. After the conclusion of the Austrian-Ottoman War of 1737-1739, the practice of leasing the Belgrade Metropolitanate’s revenues to the metropolitan, as had been the norm for centuries in the Ottoman Empire, was replaced by the leasing of the income to the chief dragoman of the Porte, Alexander Ghika. Upon his death in 1740, the lease was transferred to a new chief dragoman, John Theodore Kallimaki, who subsequently renounced this right in favor of the Patriarch of Ipek (Peć), Johnnicius Caradja (1739-1747). From November 1741 until his retirement from the position of the Patriarch of Peć, Johnnicius Caradja used the income of the Belgrade Metropolitanate to settle the obligations of the Patriarchate of Peć to the state. Even after stepping down from the throne of the Serbian Orthodox Church, he continued to collect this money. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
