Former military areas represent valuable refuges of biodiversity. Due to the activities of army units a fine-scale mosaic of various habitats has been created, forming suitable conditions for many endangered taxa. In this research we have studied the diversity of nocturnal moths in the twelve abandoned military areas in Bohemia and Moravia. Totally, the study confirmed occurrence of 558 moth species, of which 51 are classified as species of conservation interest (50 species listed in the current Red List of Invertebrates of the Czech Republic). The most significant species are Chelis maculosa, Dicallomera fascelina, Drymonia velitaris, Ocneria rubea and Watsonarctia casta. The high proportion of threatened species as well as habitat specialists of the earlier successional stages of habitats underlines the importance of former military areas for the diversity of moths.
