A recent study conducted at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark examined the infection risk among patients diagnosed with giant cell arteritis (GCA). The study found that patients with GCA have a high risk of infections in the first year after diagnosis, with a 1-year cumulative incidence proportion of 52.4% for overall infections and 17.6% for infection-related hospitalizations. The use of antibiotic prescriptions and hospitalizations for infections was significantly higher in patients with GCA compared to the general population. Factors such as higher cumulative glucocorticoid doses, advanced age, and higher comorbidity were associated with an increased risk of infections in patients with GCA. [Extracted from the article]
