Johann Thomas von Trattner (1717 - 1798) is one of the great and important printers and publishers in the Central European region in the second half of the 18th century. He contributed with his prints the development of education and the spread of knowledges. His workshops produced high-quality and often progressive works from various industries. He kept expanding and improving his business. Trattner owes his great success in the field of typographic and publishing activities primarily to the fact that he knew how to skilfully use all the possibilities that arose in the Age of Enlightenment: creating good relations with important persons in the Jesuit, academic and imperial environment, applying suitable business strategies and using backward and stagnant the state of the book market. Without the support of the imperial court, for which Trattner's business initiatives fit into the economic and educational policy, he would not have been able to implement his business on such a large scale.
