A recent study conducted by the Max-Planck-Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands explored the genetic factors associated with vocabulary acquisition in children and its relationship to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), literacy, and cognition-related traits. The study analyzed vocabulary size measures for over 17,000 children of European descent and found that early-life vocabulary is modestly heritable. The study also revealed genetic overlap between infant expressive vocabulary and toddler expressive vocabulary, as well as a genetic association between larger infant expressive vocabulary and increased risk of ADHD. The findings suggest a complex genetic architecture underlying vocabulary development and its connections to ADHD, literacy, and cognition-related traits. [Extracted from the article]
