A recent report from the Department of Obstetrics Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, discusses the potential mechanism of action of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17-OHPC) in reducing recurrent spontaneous preterm birth (PTB). The study found that the concentration of 17-OHPC in pregnant women was correlated with the production of interleukin-10 (IL-10), an immune-modulating cytokine, in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation. Additionally, an in vitro study demonstrated that 17-OHPC treatment increased IL-10 production by macrophages. These findings suggest that 17-OHPC may have an immunomodulatory effect in preventing recurrent PTB. The research has been peer-reviewed and published in the American Journal of Perinatology.
