Purpose: The aim of the present study is to review the literature about the effects of asthma and its medication on the oral health of pediatric patients. In addition, behaviour management techniques for asthmatic children are proposed. Methods and Materials: We have conducted an extended bibliographic research of the international literature in the databases PubMed and Google Scholar, as well as the international printed literature. Results: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways and it is the most common chronic disease of children. Numerous studies have shown that both asthma itself and its medication are related to the different composition of saliva and the increased caries risk of the asthmatic pediatric patients. Conclusion: Asthmatic patients are at a greater risk of developing dental diseases and the dental setting contains a multitude of common triggers for asthma attacks. This highlights the importance for dental practitioners to be vigilant, to recognise the effects of asthma in oral health and finally to prevent and to manage an asthmatic attack in the dental office.
