A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Helsinki has identified novel risk loci for congenital heart defects (CHD). CHD are structural defects of the heart that affect approximately 1% of newborns. The study utilized genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to identify three genome-wide significant loci associated with general CHD and specific subtypes. The findings suggest potential novel CHD risk-associated loci on chromosome 17 near BAHCC1 and LRRC37A2, interacting with the genes WNT9B, WNT3, and MYL4. Further experimental tests are needed to determine the role of these loci in CHD. [Extracted from the article]
