A study conducted by Richard L. Allington and his colleagues found that a summer reading program can help close the reading achievement gap between students from low-income families and those from wealthier families. The program involved allowing students to choose their own books during a spring bookfair and receiving the books at the end of the school year. Over three years, the students who received self-selected books showed improved reading achievement, similar to students who attended summer school programs. This intervention is a simple, effective, and relatively inexpensive way to address the reading achievement gap. [Extracted from the article]
