A recent study conducted at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City examined the impact of regionalizing cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer to high-volume centers on patient travel. The researchers retrospectively analyzed data from the New York State Cancer Registry and Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System, identifying 60,493 patients who underwent cytoreduction between 2004 and 2018. They found that 82.6% of patients were treated at high-volume facilities, and if cytoreductive surgery was centralized to these centers, the increase in travel distance and time for most patients would be negligible. The study suggests that centralizing cytoreductive surgery to high-volume centers in New York would not significantly burden patients in terms of travel. [Extracted from the article]
