A recent study conducted by the University of Illinois examined mortality rates and clinical co-morbidities among individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). The study used a prospective longitudinal registry called the Sickle Cell Disease Implementation Consortium (SCDIC) to collect data on 2,439 individuals with SCD. The study found that several co-morbidities, including iron overload, pulmonary hypertension, and depression, were significant predictors of the risk of death. The researchers concluded that improved comprehensive and supportive care is needed to prevent end-organ damage and address comorbidities in this population. [Extracted from the article]
