A systematic review conducted by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) aimed to assess the evidence on primary care screening and prevention of dental caries in children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 years. The review included three systematic reviews and a total of 19 randomized clinical trials, three nonrandomized trials, and one observational study. The findings indicated that the administration of fluoride supplements, fluoride gels, varnish, and sealants in dental or school settings improved caries outcomes. However, evidence on screening accuracy, silver diamine fluoride, xylitol, and harms was limited. The researchers concluded that further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of oral health preventive interventions in primary care settings and to assess the benefits and harms of screening.
