A recent study conducted by the University of Minnesota examined the effectiveness of different behavior change strategies (BCSs) in promoting sustained increases in physical activity (PA) among older adults. The study involved community-dwelling older adults aged 70 years or older who had PA levels below national guidelines. Participants were randomly assigned to receive intrapersonal BCSs, interpersonal BCSs, both types of BCSs, or an attention control group. The results showed that participants who received PA interventions with interpersonal BCS components exhibited greater increases in total PA compared to those who did not. In contrast, participants who received intrapersonal BCSs did not show significant changes in PA. The study suggests that interventions incorporating interpersonal BCSs may be more effective in promoting sustained increases in PA among older adults. [Extracted from the article]
