A recent study conducted at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, evaluated the safety and efficacy of linaclotide, a guanylate cyclase-C agonist, in children aged 6-17 years with functional constipation. The study involved 173 children who were randomized to receive different doses of linaclotide or a placebo. The primary endpoint was the change in weekly spontaneous bowel movement frequency. The study found that linaclotide was well tolerated, with a trend towards efficacy in higher doses. Further evaluation is warranted. This research has been peer-reviewed. [Extracted from the article]
