Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive, ionizing-radiation-free imaging modality, which has become an indispensable diagnostic method in medicine. The advancement of MRI technology in the field of dentistry has long been anticipated alongside the progress in imaging technology. Recently, advances in hardware and software technologies made possible that MRI can be used more often within dentistry, the so-called “dental-dedicated” MRI (ddMRI). Considering the well-established benefits of MRI in medical radiology, one can expect significant advantages in diagnostics, treatment planning, and disease progression monitoring, when using MRI technology within the dental field. In this article, we provide an overview of MRI technology, discuss the current state-of-the-art MRI technology for dentistry (i.e., ddMRI), and present some clinical examples to help understanding the value of this new diagnostic modality. Based on the available data, it is feasible to consider that ddMRI will enhance diagnostic imaging within dentistry. Future publications must provide evidence that ddMRI is not inferior to the current available imaging modalities and highlight the added value of this new technology in dentistry.
