A new report published by investigators from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) discusses the effectiveness of a nonweight-based daily dosage of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) in treating children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The study analyzed data from 2,042 children with SAM who were treated using either the standard treatment protocol (STD) or a modified treatment protocol (MTP) in Afghanistan. The results showed that the MTP protocol was noninferior to the STD protocol in terms of recovery rate and length-of-stay, although weight gain velocity was smaller in the MTP group. The study suggests that the nonweight-based daily dosage could be an alternative to the standard protocol in resource-constrained contexts. [Extracted from the article]
