Many strong seismic events have occurred in the central Mediterranean, which were accompanied by tsunamis. Among them is the February 20, 1743 AD, known as the Otranto quake which was thoroughly studied. This is a complex sequence of events, within a few tens of minutes. In the same year and month, an earthquake is mentioned in Thessaly, central Greece (Imax VIII). Despite the discrepancy of the three referring chronicles and the monastic codes in the day and time of the event, February 21 was assumed. After the detailed analysis of the manuscripts, the old Julian calendar in relation to the Gregorian and the Byzantine time followed by the monasteries in Greece, it is concluded that the "two" earthquakes coincide in time and are unified into one. In this way, the intensities and possible size of the earthquake are reviewed. The macroseismic intensities from the Greek hinterland and Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands, from Malta to the Albanian and Adriatic coasts, and especially Thessaly, identify the possible epicenter of the earthquake in the central Ionian, close to Corfu and classify the 1753 seismic event as extreme one. The affected area is greater than previous estimated. The 1743, earthquake caused heavy damages in the Western Greece, southern Albania, Salento Peninsula in Italy and is considered the strongest seismic event occurred in the area in the last centuries (Central Ionian, Max Intensity exceed X MCS, and the Magnitude could re-estimated 7.5). This earthquake consisted in a multiple shocks sequence NW-SE directed. The precise location and geometry of this complex seismogenetic source is still unknown, but it was most likely nucleated offshore along the mega thrust of Apulia and Aegean plates, close to Greek Ionian Islands and not in the Otranto Channel, according to previous works. The extreme events are important in seismic hazard analyses for the broader region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
