Researchers at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida have published a new study on lung adenocarcinomas without driver genes. The study found that these types of lung cancers exhibit convergent adaptive strategies through diverse genetic, epigenetic, and niche construction evolutionary pathways. The research suggests that positive selection of mutations is more frequent in genes with altered expression, indicating pre-existing epigenetically driven adaptations. The study also found that the convergent phenotype of these lung cancers involves loss of differentiated functions and cell-cell interactions governing tissue organization.
