A recent study conducted at the Miami Cancer Institute in Florida explored the feasibility of sparing the newly discovered tubarial glands during radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. The researchers delineated the tubarial glands for 17 patients with oropharyngeal carcinoma and re-optimized their treatment plans to minimize radiation dose to these glands while maintaining target coverage. The study found that it was possible to spare the tubarial glands using intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), with a significant reduction in mean dose to the glands. However, the researchers noted that further studies are needed to establish dosimetric constraints. [Extracted from the article]
