A recent study conducted by researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai aimed to understand the differences in cancer presentation, treatment, and mortality between rural and urban patients diagnosed with kidney cancer in the United States. The study analyzed data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEERs) database and found that patients in rural areas were more likely to present with advanced kidney cancer at diagnosis compared to those in urban areas. Rural patients also had different treatment options, including a lesser likelihood of undergoing partial nephrectomy. Additionally, rural patients with kidney cancer had significantly worse overall survival and cancer-specific survival compared to their urban counterparts. Further research is needed to better understand these discrepancies. [Extracted from the article]
