A study conducted by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle has explored the challenges in diagnosing upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), a type of urothelial cancer. The study focused on the utility of cytokeratin 17 (CK17) and CK20/CD44/p53 immunohistochemical panel in distinguishing UTUC from benign urothelium. The findings showed that CK17 staining patterns could differentiate UTUC from benign tissue specimens, while CK20/CD44/p53 markers were not effective in distinguishing neoplasia from non-neoplasia. The study suggests that CK17 immunohistochemistry could play a supplementary role in diagnosing UTUC. [Extracted from the article]
