A gene therapy trial conducted in China has shown promising results in restoring hearing and speech in children born deaf. The trial, which is the first to administer gene therapy to both ears, demonstrated additional benefits compared to previous trials where children were treated in only one ear. The therapy involved injecting functioning copies of the OTOF gene into the inner ears of patients using a minimally invasive surgery. The children showed improvements in speech perception, sound localization, and even an ability to appreciate music. The researchers believe that this approach holds great promise and warrants further international trials. [Extracted from the article]
