A systematic review conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland examined the prevalence of the female athlete triad conditions (low energy availability, disordered eating, menstrual disorders, and low bone mineral density) in female adult athletes. The review included 17 studies with a total of 1,756 participants. The findings showed that female athlete triad conditions are common among adult athletes, with prevalence rates ranging from 2.2% to 79.5% for low energy availability, 22.7% to 70.5% for menstrual disturbance, and 0% to 45% for low bone mineral density. The researchers concluded that prevention, early detection, and treatment of these conditions could improve athletic performance, protect against injuries, and reduce the risk of stress fractures.
