The Broad Institute Inc. has submitted a patent application for improved methods of detecting tumor-derived DNA in early-stage cancers, such as lung cancer. The application describes a method that involves collecting tumor-associated macrophages and isolating tumor DNA from these cells. By inhibiting the degradation of tumor DNA within the macrophages, the concentration of tumor-derived DNA can be increased, leading to improved cancer detection. The inventors have found that tumor DNA can be obtained from the lysosomes of tumor-associated macrophages without inhibiting the activity of deoxyribonucleases. This method can be used to identify and treat various types of cancer by detecting the increased concentration of tumor DNA in biological samples. [Extracted from the article]
