This article examines the kind of films produced in 1927. Historical William K. Everson declared that 1927 represented the absolute zenith of the art of the silent film. However, it was ironic that as the silent film reached its apotheosis, it should be condemned this same year by the first talking film, "The Jazz Singer." But at least nothing happened in 1927 politically that was as catastrophic as would happen in 1939. Hollywood turned out more than 700 films during this year, and since virtually every country had some kind of film industry, nobody could possibly claim to have seen everything. Year 1927 may not have had a "Citizen Kane," but it brought about advances which enabled this phenomenon to happen.
