This article presents a definition of the term ENGLISH POETRY. Arguments for the continuity of Eng. p. from the OE period to the ME period (1066-1500), whether technical (oral formulaism) or thematic (the Eng. "spirit" of the poetry) have elicited little critical concurrence. It is best to regard the pre-Conquest poetry of England as having its own character and identity. For the most part, English poems exhibit the same high conception of the poet's task, the same learned and bookish character, and the same concern for the social fabric as do the major Ricardian poems written in the last half of the 14th century.
