The article reports on the aim of the U.S. investment Carlyle Group to acquire the Taiwan-based Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASE), the world's largest semiconductor assembly and testing services provider. The Carlyle Group wanted to buy ASE for the amount of U.S. $5.5 billion. President Chen Shui-ban, president of the Republic of China was surprised by the announcement of the deal and visited the ASE chief executive chairman Jason Chang at ASE headquarters. Jason Chang claims that ASE had no plans to end the 40 percent investment ceiling and the company needed to merge with Carlyle Group to keep expanding.
