It narrates the conversation between Mr. Reynolds and Mr. James Hayley concerning Anna Bauer's link or association to the German spies believe to be numerous within England and their dislike of the charwoman who had cooked dinner for them. It also recounts the visit of Rose Blake to their house and her sympathy to Anna as well as her subsequent suicide.
