The article provides brief accounts of the life and works of the poet Kenneth Mackenzie. He was born in 1758 in Caisteal Leanir, near Inverness, Scotland, and was educated at the best schools in his native district. He became a seaman at 17 years old, and while on board composed verses as a relief to labour, and for the entertainment of his shipmates. He secured an officer's commission in the 78th Highland Regiment after quitting seafaring, which had enabled him to publish his poems.
