Those who call for more social justice in the welfare state must base the normative justifications for a re-distribution of scarce resources on clear principles. The economic principle of efficiency must be added to alternative philosophical arguments to form a theory of social justice. Their deficits in coherence, consistency and assessments of what is practically feasible are made apparent if they are critically juxtaposed. The alternative builds on the social humanistic ideas represented by the founding fathers of the social market economy, or ‚Soziale Marktwirtschaft‘, as well as by Amartya Sen, the Nobel Prize-winning Indian scholar. These ideas recall the narrow and symbiotic link between efficiency and a developed human nature. This, in turn, draws out the normative individualistic alternatives as well as the ideas espoused by John Rawls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
