The article summarizes the results of an investigation conducted by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from September to November 2008 into the cause of an outbreak of turtle-associated human Salmonella typhimurium infections. As noted, there were 135 identified cases in 25 states and in Washington, D.C. Information on the data collection strategy employed for the multistate investigation is detailed. Also noted are the actions taken by local and state governments in response to the investigation findings.
