This article focuses on Byzantium and its legacy within Russia as seen through the eyes and philosophy of Russian scholars examining the question in the 19th century. The author examines passages from the works of Nikolay Karamzin, Pyotr Chaadaev, Aleksey Stepanovich Khomyakov and Ivan Kireevsky (the two creators of the “Slavophil doctrine”). By analyzing the impact that Byzantine heritage had upon the development of Russia, notes the author, these scholars focused upon the positive elements of that legacy and how that heritage was evidenced within the Russian empire. The author notes that the image of Byzantium in the period of Russian Romanticism had two dimensions: the first was connected with the external functioning of Byzantium; the second was its unique spiritual/theological dimension.
