In this article I discuss the need for recourse to one of the most important sources of shawāhid ( loci probantis), the Qur'anic qirāʾāt, as supporting evidence for various grammatical rules. I argue that it is an error to say that poetry authenticates the qirāʾāt, rather the opposite stands true and the qirāʾāt themselves should be viewed as shawāhid. On this basis the article explores the reason for the development of the science of qirāʾāt and its relationship to the Arab tribal dialects which gave rise to it. The reliance on the qirāʾāt as shawāhid will necessarily act to expand the corpus of the Arabic language and will be an aid to the understanding of the relationship between the semantic and the phonetic aspects of lexicographical items, which confirms the necessity of such citations for grammatical, semantic and stylistic purposes.
