The article traces briefly the history of dyes and pigments from the prehistoric times to modern times. Till the late 18th century, the colouring substances obtained from natural sources, i.e., earth, plants and animals, were used. From the middle of the 19th century, starting with Perkin's work, synthetic dyes were being made. Much research effort went into developing an increasing number of colouring materials. Today, the range of applications the dyes enjoy is limitless. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
